Acne results from plugged pores. An oily compound called sebum is developed by glands below the surface of the skin. Your pores should permit this sebum to reach the surface of your skin to keep your skin moist and flexible.
But, your skin sheds old, dead cells that are replaced with new cells. The oily sebum can cause these old cells to bunch together to block the pores.
A couple of weeks before you notice anything, these clumps of oily dead skin cells have plugged up quite a few pores. The sebum which needs to reach the surface of your skin will now be blocked and starts to accumulate in the pores and glands under your skin. An infection starts as bacteria in the collection of old skin cells and oily sebum start to multiply.

As youngsters begin to mature the body starts producing new hormones. Both male and female adolescents produce the hormone testosterone. Testosterone results in a chemical reaction that causes the glands to generate extra sebum. The rise in sebum causes the skin to become oily and particles of old skin cells clump together and start to block some of the pores.
In the early twenties, young people are better able to regulate the reaction testosterone has on sebum production. As sebum production is reduced the amount of dead skin cells clumping together also is reduced. And acne goes away. Adults sometimes develop acne although their skin is less elastic and drier than that of a teenager. As a result of this, adult acne treatment differs from that used for adolescents.
What can teenagers do the reduce the incidence of acne?
The most important thing is to keep your skin free of an overload of oils. This typically requires gentle cleansing twice a day. Mild, non-alkaline cleansers work best to keep your skin free from oil and keep bacteria at bay.
Eat nutritious foods. If you eat something that causes your face to feel like it is oozing oils, you should recognize that what you just ate is not going to help keep you free of acne. Eat unprocessed foods like fruits and vegetables, meats, whole grain breads, and dairy products. Avoid manufactured foods with lots of sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

Avoid putting oily creams or cosmetics on your skin. These just increase the oils already on your skin in addition to particles that help block your pores.
