A Simple Overview of How Google Works In 3 Simple Steps

Google needs to be aware of what is going on around itself. This is nothing out of the ordinary, afterall they are the worlds largest search engine, and the reason that they are number one is because they are able to take notice of what is going on around them. They are able to deliver results to us on what pages best match a search query, what the page is about, and so on.

Now, if those results were not quite as accurate as they could be, then we can only imagine what would happen. Search quality would slowly diminish, with more spammy websites taking the higher positions in search for the most competitive phrases. As a direct result, less and less people would use Google, allowing a new competitor to take over.

I know, that is a huge amount to think about, but with all of that pushed to the side for the moment, consider what it is that has kept Google ahead of the game for so long. For nearly a decade, they have dominated the search market, and as much as I could attribute this to a massively complex algorithm that you probably have no interest in, the bottom line is that you want to know how Google works, but without the technical stuff. Here goes.

To start with, you need to understand that there are three major components to Google that are important when it comes to how the search engine continues to deliver outstanding results to people just like you and me. Two of these components works to deliver what it has discovered through common backlink indexing and discovery on the web into what we call the Index, the most important part of the entire system. So, what is the Index? It is just a very large database consisting of a few hundred billion websites that Google has discovered and feel are important enough to include in its index. Hence, the importance.

The second important piece of the puzzle is the simple interface that we use to search that you can see at the Google home page. This is a search field, plus the results page, which consist of both organic and paid results.

The next component is where things get a little tricky. You see, with as much content as there is on the web, it would be next to impossible for humans to discover the content manually. This is where the next component comes in, small software packages that we like to call “Crawlers” that follow links on the web, and report back to the Google Index what its findings are. This relates to keywords on page, links, and much more.

It really goes without saying that if you want to be included in the Google Index, then you are going to want to make sure that your site is findable by these “spiders” or “crawlers” so that they can report back to Google that your site, or new content exists. The most simple approach here is to create a link from a page that is included in the Google Index already, to your new page. If the page that you are linking from is not indexed, then you would simply need to ensure that you execute somebacklink indexing mesures on that link to make sure that it counts.

I could go on for a whole lot longer about Google, how their search function works based on its own algorithm, however I would only complicate matters more. At the end of the day, what matters most is that what you do needs to be seen by Google in order for it to count.
